VOTER VORTEX
What is Voter Vortex & What is our mission?
Voter Vortex is a Girl Scout Gold Award, made by 17 year old Molly Caufield. This Gold Award project has turned into a mission to get all ages excited about civic engagement and ready to use their voice. For older teens, this may include instruction on how to register to vote and education on why its important. For younger kids, this could include information on why election are important and why they should be confident in their own voice. To help reach these younger demographics, there is a Voter Vortex coloring book PDF, free for download to print!
WHY IS VOTER VORTEX IMPORTANT?
Voter Vortex is important because it directly addresses the issue of the lack of young voter education and turnout. After witnessing peers and younger children not understand why it is so important to address their voice, Molly decided to make a change. She determined that the main reasons for these issues are lack of knowledge on how to register to vote, why it is important to vote, and why all elections are valuable in our community. She wanted to place an emphasis on the importance of small elections in her project because they are what most affect individuals, yet there is large voter apathy toward them.
WHO BENEFITS FROM VOTER VORTEX?
The answer is everybody. Though our workshops and presentations are created for a target audience ranging from ages 5-22, there is information we provide that would be of value to anybody. If someone needs help registering, regardless of age, they can come to us for the answer. If someone doesn't understand the importance of a school board or budget election, they can come to us!
GLOBAL IMPACT OF VOTER VORTEX:
If young people get into the habit and attitude of regular voting, they will be more apt to vote in larger elections, that have a large affect on the world. Only when people understand the importance of their vote and are motivated to see the change they want will they participate in national elections. If more people are prompted to vote in national elections, then an international impact will arise. Our nation has an affect on others, and if people fight for the things they believe in they will see the elected political leaders enacting the change they want to see. This could be economical or in regards to human rights. These political leaders will ignite change throughout the world. The only way to change the way of your own country is to elect the policy leaders that will bring the change you want to see, and then those policy leaders will make the change you want to see international.
HOW WILL VOTER VORTEX MAKE A LASTING IMPACT?
Those who attend Voter Vortex workshops and presentations and see our social media campaigns will be equipped with the knowledge of their civic engagement for life, implementing a noticeable change in local election and attitude towards national ones. With our brochure and coloring book being at local libraries and consistently available online, people will have access to our resources long after the Gold Award project is finished. Our coloring book is a book encouraging young ones to be confident and use their voice, which will force them to carry that mindset to when they are of voting age. Additionally all presentations will be uploaded to social media and our website to make sure they are an accessible resource for the community. Some are young children, educating them on confidence, the importance of their voice, and how they must be the change they want to see. And some for adolescents and adults, directly educating them on voting specifically, and motivating them to also be the change they want to see.
